And how does this R599 "FlyStandby" ticket work?

It's not really a ticket - its actually a voucher which gets exchanged for a ticket when the flight is confirmed. Let's look at this example. Lets say you're interested in buying a Standby Ticket between Cape Town and ORT:

  • You go to the site www.flystandby.co.za (or take the link from the www.standby.co.za web site) and decide where you want to go to and on what day.
  • You then pay for your Standby Voucher which issues you with a voucher. This voucher:
    • Refers to your specific identity
    • Your Date of requested departure and return
    • You Standby Voucher reference number
  • This "application to fly standby" is then submitted to the various contracted airlines on the same day.
  • 24 hours later they will offer you one of the following:
    • Confirm you for a flight that suits them on that specific date
    • Offer you an alternative flight on a different day
    • Offer you a formal airline Standby, flexi ticket
    • Offer to keep you wait listed.
  • You now have your Standby ticket which will still have to be reserved on the date of the flight as per normal booking in procedures.
  • Should you decide not to accept the alternative flights offered in 6.c. above then you will be entitled to an immediate refund of your monies.
  • Please understand that these Vouchers are not interchangeable and are for use by only the member or by their one nominated family member if they have joined the Airshare club. They must be utilized in the year of purchase.

How does this work?

Fly Standby will have offer the Standby application to any of the local airlines flying on any of the local legs. A few items of information relating to the local Standby market include the fact that Fly Standby already owns seats on the various airlines.

This means that you will be able to:

  • Place your booking for a specific destination on a specific day
  • Then you buy the Fly Standby Voucher for R599.00 (one way)
  • Fly Standby then submits your Voucher application to all of the contracted airlines.
  • The Airlines then respond within 24 hours stating whether or not they accept your voucher in exchange for a ticket on a particular flight on that specific day.
  • You are now informed accordingly and would need to confirm the acceptance.
  • If the airline has no available booking for that day it may decide to formally give you an "Airline specific standby voucher" which you can either accept or reject.
  • If you reject the process then you will be entitled to a refund within 48 hours of the rejected transaction
